The Past

These two maps are historical site maps of the McKenzie property when it was broken into parcels for homesteads. In the top one, one can see that the parcels were broken into similarly sized rectangles along the river. In the lower picture, one can see the parcels along the river and who owned them at the time. As one can see, Mrs. E. D. Brooks owned the property at the time.

As time went on, and information was getting harder to find, somewhere along the process, McKenzie Country Classics that was based on the Winooski River. During our research, we learned from multiple sources that the meat house used to sit where Garden Supply stands now. We guessed that the rest of the Intervale might have been used for pastures for pigs.

In the pictures below, courtesy of Bill Gill in the map department, one can see the slight differences over time along the Winooski River. The pictures are in order of completion, the first one being in take in 1937 and the last one taken in 1988.

Below is a message from Greg Rouille, an employee of Mckenzie Country Classics.

The McKenzie clan has an extensive and rich history there in the Intervale. Up until sometime in the 80’s the family still owned the land but was sold off at one point in the 80’s.
McKenzie operated a production facility on George street in Burlington where now stands the McKenzie house. The Intervale land was where McKenzie had both a hog farm and slaughter facility. The hogs were raised there (and brought in from other hog farms) and were harvested right there at the slaughter facility. The pork was then cut into fresh primal  for sale or used in the processing of hams, bacon and sausage products which were made at the production facility on George street. In the late 50’s the slaughter house became obsolete and needed to many upgrades to continue as a viable facility to operate and was then closed. It was converted into freezers and storage and was used for that for years. In 1982 McKenzie opened a new facility on Flynn avenue here in Burlington where everything was centralized and the building and land in the Intervale became expendable and was sold.
